What is a solar energy system?

A solar energy system creates usable energy from sunlight. There are two basic kinds of systems:

  • Photovoltaic (PV): Uses sunlight to generate electricity. PV systems can be designed to generate almost all of the electricity you use in your home, or just a fraction of it.
  • Thermal: Uses sunlight to heat water. This is typically used to heat a homes hot-water supply or for pool heating. A well designed thermal system can be very effective at providing most of the hot water used in your home and thus lower your utility bills dramatically.

Both kinds of systems reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and improve the environment.

Do solar systems only work when it is sunny? What if it is cloudy?

Solar systems work even when it is cloudy. Clouds reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the solar panels, but the system will still produce electricity and/or heat on all but the most overcast days.

How does solar energy help the environment?

Solar energy reduces the amount of fossil fuel that is burned for energy. Fossil fuels are the leading cause of global warming and pollution. Using solar energy reduces air pollutants and CO2 emissions.

How can solar energy benefit me personally?

  • It reduces your energy bill.
  • In many areas, the utility company will buy any extra electricity you generate.
  • You can become energy independent.
  • After your initial investment, all the solar power you use is free.
